Guns N’ Roses of Hyderabad

A great part of my heart, soul and this site is dedicated to what i refer as “Guns N’ Roses of Hyderabad”. Yes, there was a Guns N’ Roses in Hyderabad, Pakistan called “Positive“. Unfortunately we kicked them away.

When I listen to the bands currently playing for Pakistan, I don’t see a single band that is half as good as Positive was. The first time I heard of the band positive was in 2003. I believe at that time all the bands were far better than the lot we have today. They were working for years without any fame, usually carrying out jams and gigs at their roofs and garages (and those were their only live sessions). Today the bands have a lot more support (yayyy i am one of the support), even then they are not what the undergrounds back then were.

Positive has been my favorite band of all the times. The band was primarily based on 4 members. Joseph T W used to play lead for the band. Majority compositions of the band and backing vocals were done by Joe. I am in love with his compositions. He truly reminds me of Gn’R. Nazar was the front man. He did lead vocals, compositions and rhythms for the band. He has really soulful and powerful vocals. I don’t know who did lyrics for the band but they have been one of the most powerful, influential and inspirational lyrics I have ever heard. Faiz was the keyboard/Piano player. I couldn’t hear him much in the songs though and Drums were done by

Zohaib. Later when I saw video of “Roz-e-azal”, I realized that now there is another band member “Laiq Ali Shah” playing bass for the band who was earlier not part of the band.

The band was perfect in every sense. Apart from the wonderful music they played, they were equally good with their image and videos. Clothing in their videos was done by ABCD (Ammar Bilal Clothes Designer). ABCD has also made a rock song “My favorite dream” for the brand promotion. WTF? team has been part of production and presentation for the band.

All the videos of the band have been extremly good conceptually. Three videos were released out of which two remained banned for quite a long time. Raston Pay Bikhray was the first one to come out. This is the song which greatly reminds me of the Gn’R killer stuff. It was directed by Syed Muhammad Bilal in the memory of innocent lives. Their innocence was their only crime said the director as the band sung in melodious pain “Raston pay bikhray, apnay hein tukray”. The video was aired very less. Video of “Roz-e-azal” was released then after some months. The video was directed by Syed Ali Nasir. I think this was the best song of Positive and most of you would agree with me at that. I personally love the lyrics of this song and the lead was all great. I can’t think of a single thing where Positive didn’t rock except for getting popularity. Positive gained some popularity after release of this video. Video was made against child molestation. I love the tweety tie part that the director chose to portray someone who molests kids. The video got banned later even though it was made AGAINST molestation. The first two videos were low budget. Since this video brought a little popularity to band they did spend some money on the next video. Last video band released before disappearing was “Kaisay Jiyoon”. Once again I was mesmerized by the Positive effect. Video started with a verse

To Thee I Turn

For Thee I Bow

The Wheels of Time

May Rust, May Rot

O God,

May this End

Never be Plot

Video was made in the loving memory of a girl who got addicted to drugs after a tragic loss. Again the video was banned even though it was made on drug awareness. Faisal Shah made an appearance as a model.

Last time i talked to Laiq, he told me the band has made 46 songs by now. They are not releasing their stuff anymore and are not planning to release any album. Their stuff is solely for their souls.

I have been and I will be truly Positive till the end. It was one of the greatest Pakistani bands. I miss Positive truly and it really hurts me that we have lost one of our greatest bands because we didn’t care for them and now they are long gone. They are not coming back for any of us. I did respect them but even I can’t hear Positive anymore.
