Interview: Taha Malik & Rola Team on Kostal’s ‘Jaan Jaye’

December 6, 2009

“We’re a music production duo. Our style is a mixture of electronic and organic music.” – Taha Malik
As the debut video of Kostal makes way from the Internet to the airwaves, Instep catches up with Taha Malik of Kostal

By Maheen Sabeeh

Omran Shafique and Taha MalikInstep: What can you tell me about Kostal?
Taha Malik: Kostal is Taha Malik and Omran Shafique. We’re a music production duo. We first met in 2002 while working on many side projects. During the recording of Mauj‘s debut album at my studio in Houston, Omran and I would write dance and hip hop style records. As our library of ideas grew, we decided that we should compile the best and make an album of them. Of course, Kostal is much more than that now. We are currently writing/producing for other artists, movies, commercials, and any other projects we can get our hands on. The collective manifoldness of our musical backgrounds allows us to experiment with all types of styles and genres, from French rappers to rubab and tabla, to jazz-fusion, rock, Arabic… anything really. We love it!

Rock ‘n’ roll Eid

Rock ‘n’ roll Eid

Musicians tell Instep Today what they’ll be doing and wearing over the Eid holiday..

Aysha Manahi

What do musicians do on Eid? Well, they spend it like any other Pakistani, mostly traditionally. This Instep Eid survey threw up some surprising results. Amanat Ali of Kohram fame is possibly the most fashion conscious musician going, followed by Farhan Saeed and Goher Mumtaz of Jal. On the other hand, hardcore rocker Ali Noor is against blowing up big bucks for a designer outfit on Eid. His brother Ali Hamza wears whatever his mother or grandmother wants him to and so does Ehtesham of ‘Aisi Taisi’ fame. Nearly everyone favours tradition for a day or two at most and then will get back into their jeans and chill out… except for Uns Mufti who gives out the loudest rebel yell of all…

Omran Shafique talks about the album delay and the new venture Kostal

– By Khaver Siddiqi

A member of Co-Ven, frontman for the band Mauj, a guitarist for Ali Azmat, guest musician on Coke Studio (and part of the house band, a year later as well), and member of a musical collaboration known as Kostal. No, these aren’t a group of people, in fact, all of these musicians are actually one and the same; Omran Shafique.
