Mekaal Hasan, Atif Aslam & Others Working with Indian Classical Singer Mahua Sen

June 8, 2011

What I really love about Mekaal Hasan Band is that despite the fact Mekaal is a rock and jazz guitar player, he keeps the eastern classical outfit in his songs. One such project is again in the pipeline that will feature an Indian classical singer “Mahua Sen” on the vocals probably in a collaboration with MHB’s 19 year old vocalist Asad Abbas, Atif Aslam and few other well-known names of the industry.

Mahua Sen is a visual artist, singer, songwriter, painter and a film maker. She defines her genre as classical/progressive. Though her homeland is New Delhi, India, she came to Lahore on a 2 weeks trip to meet friends and make music with ace Pakistani musicians. “The best thing about Lahore was the generosity of company.. returned back to Delhi after two weeks.. I left a huge part of myself behind” told Sen while expressing her stay at Lahore.

A New Generation of Rock

By Zeerak Ahmed

The rise of Bilal Khan, the Aunty Disco Project & Uth records has signaled the coming of a new generation of rock music from Pakistan’s renewed underground scene. After the rise of Noori and eP, along with Indus Music, the VJ generation and a post Junoon revelation, it seems that generation of rockers will take a new place in Pakistan’s rock industry.

The energetic rock anthems have since become somewhat hollow, and as Pakistan’s politics and society have hit new rock bottoms, rock has had to find new issues, new emotions to deal with. It seems the big guns have had to deal with social issues, and bringing audiences back together. Strings, Atif Aslam, Ali Zafar and then Noori to some degree have tried to mature their pop acts into deeper, more relevant offerings.

Some may say however, that this generation did not live up to its promise. Despite the phenomenal rise of 2003’s musicians, many have released only a handful of songs, let alone albums. Atif has been an exception

Mention Pakistan today and what comes to the minds of most Americans is terrorism, poverty, and hopelessness. That’s all they see in the news. But Pakistan also has one of the world’s most diverse and rich cultures, equaled only by its spectacular natural beauty as home to part of Kashmir, the Khyber Pass and high mountain peaks like K2. Once upon a time in the not so distant past, Texan gun enthusiasts brought their prized antique revolvers to Peshawar’s gun smiths to make copies, actor Robert DeNiro posed for pictures with restaurant owners while vacationing in Chitral, and Mick Jagger tested his dance skills with Lahore’s most well-known Mujra dancers. And many of Pakistan’s greatest musicians and singers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan regularly collaborated with their counterparts in Europe and America such as Peter Gabriel and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.
