By Ahmad Uzair

Coke Studio is one of the biggest musical phenomenon of the past decade and five years on, it is still successfully running and much appreciated by a wide audience all across the globe. It all started in 2008 when Rohail Hyatt of Vital Signs fame came up with his brain child and an idea that instantly clicked. Although the first season was quite a big hit and introduced a new dimension to the local music scene, but many people were still not really aware of this project and it took some time for them to digest it.

Ali Zafar & Several Other Musicians Write to Provincial Govt. to Reconsider Taxation on Live Shows

In the times when no real money is generated from the sales of the actual music, musicians pretty make much their entire livelihood off live shows. Even when the situation is pretty shocking, both for the individual musicians and the entertainment industry at large, the government of Punjab has discouraged live shows every now and then.

Earlier this year, Punjab assembly passed a resolution to ban concerts in educational institutions, which are pretty much the only concert venues, since there aren’t much open-theaters or concert venues in this country. This was overturned by the assembly upon constant protest by the musicians.

Jal: Farhan and Beyond

May 9, 2012

By Hani Arif

We were all sad when we heard that Farhan had quit Jal and decided to go solo. The shock factor remained intact as to why it had happened despite achieving the highest musical representation in Pakistan i.e. getting featured on Coke Studio. Do you ask the reason why we were all sad?

Firstly: Essence of Bands: Farhan was made by Jal and he had betrayed such a cordial relationship that he shared with his band mates, it was as if this can happen with Jal, it can happen with anyone else.

Ali Zafar – London, Paris, New York (Music Review)

February 28, 2012

By Mutee

While Ali Zafar has multiple mega hit tracks to his name with lots of awards and vast recognition, it wasn’t until very recently that the poster boy for Pak-Pop showed the world that he deserves all the attention for his music. The improvement was first highlighted with his various appearances in Coke Studio series, performing some of his old material but mostly leaning towards a new soulful musical direction. This great musical growth was sustained pretty well in his 3rd album “Jhoom” which was released by his own label Alif Records (and by YRF Music in India) roughly a year ago.

The Sketches – Nind Nashe Vich (Single Review)

February 24, 2012

By Mutee

Our country’s star-chasing music scene often fails to recognize greatness unless it is too late or there is some reassurance from elsewhere in the world. The Sketches’ debut album (2010’s “Dastkari”) came and went with no industry excitement. Pressed by Fire Records along with a heap of releases (some recognizable, some mediocre), “Dastkari” faded without making a significant mark. The band’s ambitious and mature approach however did prove to be fruitful in form of a much sought after slot in last year’s Coke Studio, solidifying their status as legitimate and talented musical force.
