Club Caramel – Deewana (KM Single Review)

With a song recorded and mixed at True Brew Records at Lahore, Pakistan, Club Caramel are back with a new song named “Deewana”, released alongside a new video. The song was supposedly going to be a Valentine’s Day treat, but what do you know… some people can celebrate early.

Lahore-based pop/rock band Club Caramel was recently in the spotlight for signing a music video and brand endorsement deal with Samsung in Pakistan. It seems that not only is the group becoming more popular with brands, but also with the fans, with over 25,000 fans on Facebook. 25,000 and counting.

In the new track “Deewana”, Kiran Chaudhry is on vocals whilst Adnan Sarwar strums the guitar as well as doing the occasional “hoo hoo’s” too. Sameer Ahmed plays bass, Fahad Khan hits the drums, Jamal Rahman shakes the… well shakers, and Asif Goga pats the bongos. Cleverly composed, the song mixes together a fusion of different musical instruments.

On the first listen, I wasn’t expecting much. The second time, the tune stuck into my head.

The song begins with some light acoustic strumming and clicks, as Kiran begins singing with her voice that many have described being similar to Nazia Hassan’s. Nevertheless, the shakers, drums and bongos come into the mix later on. “Deewana” has two clean guitar solos played by Adnan, bringing him into the spotlight we don’t see too often. Unlike the gothic “Teray Bin”, “Deewana” is more upbeat and happy. Of course, it has to be, capturing the essence of Valentines.

The video doesn’t have a big production like “Teray Bin”, but it’s nice and smooth. We do get a lot of shots of Kiran however, whilst Adnan shows his stylish side like in “Teray Bin” all suited and booted. The biggest feature in the video however is Kiran’s lipstick, which stands out against the contrasting colours in the set.

“Deewana” can be seen as a musical improvement. The song (especially the chorus) becomes addictive, and the video gives us a sense of what Club Caramel are like behind the scenes (I’m sure Kiran doesn’t stab men like in the video of “Teray Bin”). Kiran and Adnan are simply happy and stylish individuals with a passion for music.
