5 Minutes With Natasha Ejaz (Interview)

We sat down with Natasha Humera Ejaz who recently performed a session for Uth Records and talked about her work, experience with Uth Records and possible future endeavors.

1. How did you begin? How do you define your sound?

Ans: How did I begin? *giggles* That’s a funny question. I jest – I suppose it’s safe to say my song writing journey started at 15 when I picked up the guitar for the first time. As far as what my sound is, to be honest I think at the moment I’m a blend of part jazz, part indie, part folk, part trip hop. But I prefer not to label myself, not for the moment at least.

2. What influences your music?

Ans: Life! The world. Molecules! Sorrow, happiness, madness… everything… Soon, I release more music; the one theme that will become more and more prominent is the duality of life. I try to express that in contrasting progressions, with ironic lyrics… heh, my friends actually call my songs bipolar.

3. How do you find Uth Records? How was your work experience with them?

Ans: Uth Records has been an eye opener. An experience that has reinstated my faith in the skill and farsightedness of the veteran musicians/producers of Pakistan. I’m really excited about the prospects of recording an album eventually in Pakistan, working with the likes of Gumby and Omran, one could not feel more secure. A lot of people have never heard me in this treatment before, and for most the part I was very sceptical about what I would sound like. I’m a hippy kid, don’t to hip hop. But then Taha did his magic somehow managing to maintain the essence of me. It takes to a true producer to be able to maintain that balance between one’s owns ideas and what the artist is expecting.

4. Have you been contacted by any big name other than Uth Records?

Ans: Yes, I have been very fortunate to have received attention from some really big names in the industry but because nothing solid has still come of those creative sessions, I choose to keep mum.

5. Any new upcoming projects?

Ans: There’s always upcoming projects. 😛
