Ali Zafar“Keep politics out of art and culture,” says Ali Zafar. “Things have to get better between the two countries,” Ali says optimistically. “The sooner the better. Because the present hostility is unbearable. We from the entertainment industry in Pakistan are hard hit by the suspicion between the two countries.”

Ali lives in Lahore, has a second home in Dubai and wants to relocate to Mumbai to further his career. He is honest enough to admit that there’s more scope for him to function in India than in Pakistan. Hey says, “I’ll be honest. There are more avenues and prospects here (India). So if the God above and the politicians down below permit, I’d love to move to Mumbai. An artiste knows no bounds and boundaries. My first home is Lahore. But I’d like to make Mumbai my second home.” “Actors are like vagabonds, so I will travel wherever work takes me. There are no plans as of now to shift to Mumbai.”

In the last 6-7 years, he has been to Mumbai at least 20 times.

However, he was unable to return recently because of the current political scenario. “Things have changed. My last visit was before 27/11 and I remember how pleasant the mood was in Mumbai. I was free to move around and roam freely on the streets of Mumbai. I cannot deny there’s tension between the two countries. Earlier aana jaana laga rehta tha. Initially, we artistes from Pakistan used to get multiple visas quite easily. Yes now it’s different, and sadly so. However, I feel singers and other artistes should be exempt from politics.”

“I wanted to do something different from what my colleagues from Pakistan do in India. I always thought my first acting experience would be something different and special. I’ve no leading lady in my first film Tere Bin Laden. I was determined that when I act for the first time, I’d sing for myself and not sing for others on screen. When I met the director Abhishek Sharma for Tere Bin Laden in Mumbai, I knew this was the project that I wanted to start my big-screen acting career with. I laughed so much when I heard the script. I was sure audiences would love it too.” Being married doesn’t diminish Ali’s popularity. “On the contrary female fans trust married men more than unmarried men. Married men are considered stable.”

He has managed to impress most people who have seen the film. Karan Johar has been raving about him ever since he watched it. Ali is on the verge of signing new films in Mumbai and moving in Mumbai. “I love the city. I want it to love me back as much as I do.”

i hate when every pakistani actor or singer goes to mumbai and wants ta live there and doesnt want ta come back and then blame politics. They should work hard here in pakistan to promote pakistani film industry rather than going to india. We are actually helping them by singing and acting in their films, if we can sing or act in their films why can’t we sing for pakistan? just not fair on pakistan. look at coke studio, they are absolutely amazing they dont need to go to india to show them off ?????

  2. Abhishek says:

don’t blame it to Ali , if your film industry was as popular as ours then they would have wanted to work in Pakistan only.
Here Pakistani Singers are very much Admired be it Atif, Strings,Junoon,Call,Jal or Ghulam Ali.
We don’t criticize any of our actors if they work in any Hollywood film.

Abhisek is right (sorry my fellow pakistanis have over the last 30 years become hyper nationalist, that was the govt’s brainwashing so it’s not their fault entirely).Ali Z has also started his own company (Alif Films) to help pakistani film industry, so he is being honest and straight forward about this business. I would request people to please don’t bring nationalism in everything.

People stop being so frigging melodramatic and emotional. Wasey tu her tarah kee chalaki aur daghabazi ati hay pakistani logon ko but in bataon may bilkul seeday hain. Dunya kahan say kahan pohanch gaye hay aur yai bethay wohi 18th century may ..puraney concept lay ker. Jub ali zafar aur rest of the industry concerts na honay kee waja say bhuka marain gay tu tum ja ker unkee family ko palo gay. Batain kerni atyi hain buhat aur practicality naam kee koi cheeze nahi in logon may. I am from lahore and I hate mentality of 99% people around me. He has done a bollywood film so you have all praises for him but if he has said he’ll work in india more..tu sab doo saal kay bacho kee tarah behave kerna shuru ker detay hain. GROW UP!!!

If you are say a software developer and say you get offered a job by Microsoft at the states, wouldn’t you look fwd to join without a second thought? In that case, it’s cool if you leave the country for your profession. But an actor, can’t move to another country for his profession?

  13. nargis says:

He is not selling his country, he is selling his talent, the same way you all do business with the international market. Its a case of Khate Angoor, thats all. Besides if you all our so patriotic why did you all not object to the movie ban in pakistan? why did you not support one of your own artists? if he said he was selling his talent to any other country besides india, you all would not even care. Dont doctors, professional athelets, musicians etc perform in other countries….only difference those countries are proud to share their talent.
