Salman Ahmad to perform at the UN General Assembly

September 5, 2009

SB_SalmanIt’s a great cause, a charitable one… a charity concert for the 3 million internally displaced people (IDP) of Pakistan in the aftermath of the Swat crisis. Set to be held at the UN General Assembly on September 12, 2009 in New York City, the event is aimed primarily to raise funds for the IDPS.

And when it comes to charitable causes or voicing an opinion, Salman Ahmed never shies away.

Through his NGO, Global Wellness Initiative, Salman has organized a concert for Pakistan in association with the United Nations.

According to the press release, the show will be “recorded and televised on every major network in Pakistan, as well as on various networks around the planet.”

And Salman along with his band Junoon isn’t the only shining light of the show.

Other acts that are supposed to participate include Sting (via video), singer/songwriter Melissa Etherdge, Jeff Skoll, eBay cofounder, film producer and social philanthropist, and Outlandish, a progressive Danish Muslim hip-hop act.

Invitation has been extended to US First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, UN Goodwill Ambassador and actress Angelina Jolie, and singer-songwriters Bruce Springsteen and Bono.  Funds raised for the concert will go directly to UNHCR.

From Salman to the UN, the statement is similar, an effort to end the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan. While one concert won’t do it, the funds will definitely help the young, homeless and desperate. And for that effort, cheers to Salman Ahmed for getting it together for the sake of Pakistan.
